Spending time with God through Scripture reading and prayer draws us closer to Him. First Light is a great way to make the Bible part of your daily life.
There are two reading plans to choose from:
Chronological New Testament with Psalms
The Heart of the Old Testament
- or -
You can follow both plans which will allow you to read the entire New Testament, the Book of Psalms, and the heart of the Old Testament.
Or you can choose one plan or the other depending on your preferences.
Here are some tips for enhancing your time alone with God.
Make spending time alone with God the top priority of each day. Set aside a prime time slot in the day for God.Remember that reading the Bible devotionally is an acquired skill. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t come away with spiritual goose bumps every time you spend time alone with God.Stay with it and your time with God will become more meaningful as time passes. Start your time with God with a short prayer acknowledging God’s presence and asking him for His guidance as you read His Word. Spend the first portion of your Quiet Time studying the Word (listening to God) and the second portion in prayer (speaking to God).Select a manageable portion of Scripture. The goal is not to cover a lot of ground, but to read thoughtfully and for personal application. Consider reading each chapter through at least twice. The first time through get a feel for the passage. The second time mark some of the verses that stand out to you.Record your insights in a spiritual journal (any kind of notebook will do). Recording your insights helps clarify your thoughts and makes them stick. Record the date, write a few sentences about what God said to you through the Scripture, and then write a brief prayer of response to God.Pray using the A.C.T.S. acrostic.Invite a friend, family member(s), or small group to read the same Scripture passages and meet regularly to share what God is speaking to you and pray together.
- Begin with Adoration of God
- Confess your sin to God
- Thank God for his blessings
- Seek God’s supply for your needs and the needs of others.
